wireless laptop with Wi-Fi problems

I bought a Sony Vaio PCG-VX serie in the UK. Now I am in the USA. Although my laptop managed to connect to some hotspots (hotel, coffe shop, etc)in the USA I cannot use any browser (e.g. netscape, IE, etc) to surf the Internet. Apparently my laptop has problems to obtain a TCP/IP number from the ISP(USA).

Is this problem because my laptop is for use in the UK only?

How can I check that the DHCP in my laptop is active?

Any help highly appreciate.

Have you checked that in Properties for TCP/IP for your wireless network connection are set to

Obtain an IP address automatically

and

Obtain DNS server address automatically
