Wireless from a laptop

I just now this is "operator" trouble...... My friends (no really!) laptop has wireless but on booting it is always off and has to be switched on manually. I have tried searching through all of the settings to change it to being on at boot but to no avail. The laptop is running XP home....... anyone help?

You could right click 'My computer' then manage then double click 'services and applications' then 'services' to see if 'wireless zero config' has started and is set to start automatically.

Thanks...looked at that but it would appear that it is set as you have described but still needs to be turned on.
