Wireless keyboard/mouse prob with Linux

I have been using Mepis Linux for a while now and have been very happy with it (as it is the ONLY distro out of a lot, including WinXP, that "just works" with my wireless card, but thats another story). I recently upgraded my keyboard and mouse to a Creative Wireless 6000 pair that plug into a single USB socket. I then found that the mouse would not work correctly, but move very jerkily across the screen. I booted into the 2.4 kernel and this seemed to solve the problem...

I have now decided to upgrade to the pro version of Mepis, but this doesn't seem to offer the 2.4 option - and booting with the 2.6 kernel the mouse goes crazy again. It is extremely difficult to use as the mouse cannot be positioned accurately.

Is there any way to overcome this problem?
