Wireless function (or not) on Canon Pixma MP600R

My Canon Pixma MP600R will not print wirelessly.
The software installs OK while my laptop is connected to the printer by a USB cable as per the instructions and gets to the point where I have to select my wireless network (the router) and input the pass key.
It then searches for the printer but it then tells me ‘Port Is Not Installed. Install A Port’.
The printer has installed and is visible in the Printers folder and I can print via USB.
When I check the printer properties the printer is connected via a USB port. There is a Canon port listed but if I try to ‘allocate’ the printer to that port nothing changes.
Prior to this I had a Canon MP620 installed and working perfectly both wirelessly and via USB but I have since uninstalled this.
Any ideas
