Wireless Connection Speed

I've got two computers, one running a wireless USB card (at 1.0Mbps in the icon tray) and another running a wireless PCI card (at 54.0Mbps in the icon tray).

I've just upgraded the line to 2.0Mbps which will take a few days. In the meantime, any idea why one would show 1.0Mbps and the other 54.0Mbps? On each computer as well as the wireless card speed I've also got an icon for the internet connection speed showing 1.1Mbps on both computers.

How can I change them to show the same? Is there anything wrong with one of them?

Do you connect using ICS or do you have a router?
