WinXP Freezing after Logon

I have WinXP Professional SP3, plenty of memory, fast processor and plenty of hard disk space available. I'm using Internet Explorer 8. At startup Yahoo Messenger starts automatically. If I leave the PC logged in for a while it freezes when I return to use it. I can't use the mouse or task start manager, trying either results in the egg timer which stays forever! I also find the PC freezes if I logoff but later come back and logon again.

I've tried updating drivers for graphics card and network card but no use.

Can anyone help with this problem?

Thank you.

Have you had the cover off and checked the heatsink and fans for accumulated dust?

CPU fan working OK? Any hardware/software added that seemed to preceed the problem?

Try reset the bios default, install the latest chipset driver, reboot. Reseat the HDD data cable may help.

If same problem, disable all startup apps using msconfig.

FReeezing PC

  1. Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans

  2. PSU voltages

  3. Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off

  4. faulty memory stick try memtest http://www.memtest86.com/

  5. virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use

  6. driver conflicts especially grahics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment

I had a similar problem a while ago, but with Vista. Removing and reinstalling Norton Internet Security solved it. I arrived at this solution because after repeated restarts, Norton stopped working and a window came up telling I needed to authorise the software, but it wouldn't accept my password.

To see if it is your security software locking up during a background scan, try disabling it for a while and see if your computer still freezes. If it does, at least you will have eliminated one possible cause.
