"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt" \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM "You can attempt to repair .using Setup CD.......select "r" at first screen.

This gives you a few DOS commands, so I followed Microsoft Article ID 307545, entered commands in Part One and got rid of error message, but cannot boot in safe mode (or any other mode) to complete three other steps.

I have also tried chkdsk /r "one or more files is unrecoverable"

Any ideas.

XP SP3 - yes I do have the original OS CD, thanks for the screen prints, I will give it a go and report back.
