Ok this thread has begun using my laptop as my main computer will not boot up.
at start up I recieve this message:
"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt"
the file being the one in the title.

I have tried various things already including following the steps after loading xp disk, also looked at articles of the web,but I am having difficulties because my computer has OEM software.

any help thanks.

Thanks johnny, I have already looked thru some of this stuff but I can't see the fixes if you have OEM software.

Have you tried Safe Mode?

You could also try this

At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer will restart.

Note This procedure assumes that Windows XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder. Make sure to change C:\Windows to the appropriate windows_folder if it is a different location.

You will need to download windows updates again.

If there is anyone with any ideas please let me know, the reason being, OEM software seems to make a difrerence.
