Windows XP wont shutdown when connected to network

I've searched on this and followed various links, so far to no avail...

Brand new Dell laptop, win XP pro; when connected to our network (via Novell client) it will often fail completely to shut down - the screen goes black, but the mouse pointer remains.

When used off the network, it shuts down and powers off fine. Logging off the network first, then shutting down, doesn't cure the problem.

I recall that win98 used to have similar problems with Novell client; along the lines of windows would close the network connection and THEN would wait for some confirmation back from the network before shutting down!

Anyone else had / cured this problem?
