Windows xp won't load after system restore.

I have windows xp, I did a system restore to get rid of some old programes, as I thought it might speed up computer. I then did another system restore to go back further. Now when I put password in to logon I get Explorer.exe telling me unable to locate component wininet .dll. It suggests to reinstall, but I don't know what to do. If I click on ok on this message it goes to blue screen.
I have tried F8 on start up, but start up screen has 'select first boot device' over it.
I would be grateful for any advice.

System Restore doesn't "get rid" of old programs - you need to use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to do that (XP) or Programs and Features on Vista/W7

Restore does not remove programs. main thing it does is restores the registry. You may be able to rerun a newer Restore point if you can get to safe mode
