Windows XP - Windows restarts automatically on sh

After instructing XP to shutdown it restarts instead of shuting down and it is necessary to switch off on the start/stop switch on the computer front panel. Does this require a reinstall/repair. Service pack 3 has recently been installed but I cannot directly associate this with the problem.

Are you thinking of Vista? XP has two separate buttons - restart or shutdown.

steve hill is correct, as I've occasionally found out when forgetting to select Shut Down after Restart has reappeared on the drop down menu.

Turn off at the mains, hold the On button for several seconds. Computers, eh?

I don't use a drop down menu on XP - I use the default. Of course you can change it by going to "Change the way users log on or off".

Many thanks to all who replied. I now have a more serious problem and it looks like a new motherboard will be required
