Windows XP two copies, one 'locked' & redundant?

Hard drive 'melted' last year. Technician repaired computer and recovered all data. Can't contact him. However, at the time, he installed his own backup copy of XP Home, in case things went pear-shaped. Then, the 30 day limit for registration ran out on backup copy. My own XP Home is running okay, but I wonder if performance is affected by second XP Home hiding in background. I can't access it. Am I right to want to Uninstall this backup version? If so, how on earth do I get at it? If I try on the BIOS screen, it just tells me that I can't load the backup XP program. I can see nothing relevant on Control Panel. Help!!

30 day limit for registration on backup copy will not be a problem just follow instructions when activating copy of WIN/xp.
