Windows XP Startup in Text Mode

  WardaleM 14:19 19 Jun 05

My son "tried to fix a problem" on my PC by going into msconfig and selecting the restart in text mode option.

He then got stuck and gave up.

How do I get windows back?

Help me please before I go insane!

start in safe mode then change msconfig

repeatedly tap the F8 button on boot up.

When you get the menu, select last known good configuration.

Start, Run, type

and clicg OK. On the General tab tick Normal Startup, click Apply, Click OK.

Sorry I seem to have 2 copies of the thread open.

The screen I see has safe mode in each corner, no icons and an ms-dos window on the left side

Is there a Start button?

Is there a > prompt in the MSDOS box?

there is no start button (or toolbar at the bottom) but the MSDOS box does have a > prompt.

I might be able to get msconfig to run if I knew where in the directory structure it is. Can anyone help?

That should bring up your msconfig box, change the startup type to 'normal'
