Windows XP start up stops at set up/default

At Windows XP start up on my Mesh PC the system gives a screen with F1 for set up or F2 for default values. Pressing F2 leads to normal start up and PC works OK. Only thing that is unusual is that the clock has returned to January 2002 which is approx 9 months before I purchased the PC.

This has only happened in last few days and since I recently updated Windows with several security updates and also Office 2003 - could this be the reason?

Could it be the battery on the motherboard?

Sounds very much like it, bugged a mate of mine for ages until someone told him to change the battery!

Battery replaced but no improvement.

With the system resetting the date Norton now tells me that my subscription has expired.
