when you click on the start menu on windows xp - the column on the right lists...

my documents
my recent documents
my pictures
my music
my computer

however my mum has managed to lose ( don't know how ) the 'my pictures' part when she was moving files around - i think it is probably something to do with user settings but I am at a loss as how to get this back

any help would be much appreciated

Right click the Taskbar, Properties, Start Menu tab.

Customize button, Advanced tab, scroll down and tick the option you want for My Pictures.

Try opening "my documents" and make a copy of the "my pictures" folder, copy to the desk top, then drag the copy folder to the start button upon which the start menu will appear then drop in the right hand panel.............just tried it and it works on my xp system.
