Windows xp start-up

my new pc asus a8n-sli, sli pci-e video card,1gb mem,2x sate 160gb drives, dvd/dvd rw.
at start -up of pc starts windows then stops at windows xp welcome screen. have to revert back to restore , sometimes up to 3 weeks ago. no error messages are shown on screen.
has anyone any ideas why this is happening

When it does it again, restart in safe mode. Go through your msconfig and disable things until you find the culprit. My best guess would be something is auto-updating with a faulty update ?
