windows xp setup

Here's the problem.
Up graded my sons PC with an Abit UL8 board, 3200 athlon 64, 526mb ddr ram.
since installing the hard ware it won't go beyond the safe mode option screen.
Ok I thought, run setup and repair windows. It goes so far then I get the following blue screen message

file\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error message is 7

tried 2 different xp disks just to rule out disk damage.

any suggestions please, although my current personal one is a sledge hammer!
