Which version of Windows?

OOPs XP - must see my optician.

Have you used any sort of "clean up" utility lately?

I've cleaned up as usual so I don't think it's any thing to do with that - the search works from everywhere else just not from the start button.

ok, I sorted it myself, for any of you out there to cut a long story short it was my firewall blocking access. I found out while installing another program I shutdown all progs to install and after the install I started my anti-virus and the nthe firewall. the firewall would not start back up, strange, so I tried the search and it worked, restarted the PC and firewall seemed ok, but could not search on a right click from the start button again.
I'd installed a trial version of Zone Alarm Pro and reverted back to the free version at the end of the trial period something must of happened, anyway, I uninstalled the firewall and then reinstalled it and when I tried the search firewall popped a message saying did I want to let MS search access so and so file ticked the box said yes and all is well.
