Windows XP repair. Will not accept password.

  Megatyte 12:17 03 Nov 04

Hi all,

Notebook running XP will not boot. Can't get into safe mode either(registry suspected). Booted from XP CD and chose the repair option but passwords are rejected. There are three user accounts set up, all as Admin, and all three passwords fail.

Any ideas appreciated.

Some times if the company suplyed you with a system restore disc it will sometime require you to enter a password....try looking in the manual.

If this you havent got the manual try looking on the companys website or emailing them

Try a repair instalation rather than the recovery console (the password for the recovery console is the Administrators password first entered when XP was installed)

If you use your XP installation disk and select Install (Setup) you will be taken to a point where you can choose the Recovery Console.

Ignore at this stage and carry on the Installation until you reach the Repair choice after the XP already on the HDD is detected.

You can also do it this way.......

1. Start your computer.
2. Insert the Windows XP CD in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
3. On the Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP page, click Install Windows XP.
4. On the Welcome to Windows Setup page, click Upgrade (Recommended) in the Installation Type box (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
5. On the License Agreement page, click I accept this agreement, and then click Next.
6. On the Your Product Key page, type the 25-character product key in the Product key boxes, and then click Next.
7. On the Get Updated Setup Files page, select the option that you want, and then click Next.
8. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall Windows XP.

Ignore that, didn't read the post correctly.

That did as much as is needed.

Now booting into XP but the system is all screwed up. Files and documents are now accessible though so they can be backed up ready for a cleany.
