When I start XP Pro, a small screen pops up named "Windows File Protection" -
I says:'Please wait whilst Windows verifies that all protected Windows files
are intact and in their original versions' It then starts scanning the
files with a blue progress bar showing how far it's got.-- I can cancel this
but - My question is - should I allow it to do the full scan each time
Windows starts ? (It takes ages ) and how do I prevent it popping up each
time ? Any help will be appreciated. -John

you need to loook in the msconfig list for something that looks similar to sfc (system file checker) scannow although why it would be there is beyond me

If it's not in the list then the problem lies elsewhere

to check click on start and select run from the menu, type msconfig into the box and hit ok.

A new box will come up, select the very last tab on the right and have a look.

Jonny Tub - I checked the startup list in MSCONFIG - nothing there for sfc or scannow

1. Enter Safe Mode:
a. Restart the computer.
b. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
c. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.
2. Search and Rename sfc.exe:
a. Click Start, and then click Search (->For Files or Folders).
b. In the Search Companion dialog box, click "All files and folders".
c. Type "sfc.exe" (without quotation marks) in the "All or part of the file name" box
d. In the "Look in" box, choose "Local Hard drives".
e. Click "More advanced options" to make sure that the "Search subfolders", "Search hidden files and folders", and "Search system folders" are selected.
f. Click Search.
g. Rename each sfc.exe into oldsfc.exe.
Reboot the computer and check if the issue is resolved.

Sorry about those instructions, they're a bit gobbledygook, if you need them explaining, post back.

Jonny Tub - I looked for the file sfc.exe as you suggested - no such file but there is an application called sfc in Windows System32. When I try to open it, an MS-DOS (Black) cscreen flashes quickly then nothing else. There is also a file called sfc.dll in the dll cache

very strange, it should be located in the c:\windows\system32 file, see if you can manually navigate to it.

Also are you in safe mode?, have you enabled show hidden files and folders.

If your running xp then thats where sfc.exe should be...

Double check everything
