I have recently returned from holiday in Poland and while I was out there I discovered the bargain of the century. I returned with a brand new laptop in a shiny case, Win XP, blah blah. Everything is in POLISH can anybody tell me how to convert it to English

Sounds like you have a Polish version of XP. Not sure you can change it to English though...

Start ->
Settings ->
Control Panel ->
Regional and Language Settings ->
Second tab at the top of the window that appears (Language)-> button at the top (Details) and change it to English, this is for the language of the keyboard.

But to change the other language settings just go to:
Start ->
Settings ->
Control Panel ->
Regional and Language Settings
