Windows XP not loading?

What happened was that yesterday I successfully displayed my laptop screen (Dell Inspiron 8200) onto my tv screen, via a svideo cable. I was able to bore guests with a slideshow of stored pics. The tv was in demand so I changed the ext on the tv. When I next displayed my screen only the image appeared, no text, just the wallpaper pic which i have currently on my desktop. I tried to go through the procedure again, via display properties and believe I may have disabled the laptop display. All that happens now on startup is the Dell splash followed by XP screen, the bluey gray blank screen. I have tried booting from disk (using the disk as first boot) to no avail. When doing this all I am left with is a small blue window on a black background saying windows setup is restarting.
