Windows XP no icons or task bar

A work colleague was complaining that when he tried to access control panel in XP, clicking on the icons would not activate the program and that control panel closed again. I've just phoned him to check he was using an adminstrator account (he says he was) but he now says that on bootup he just gets the wallpaper with no icons or task bar. He had the sasser worm last week but we cleared that with the symantec fix, ran Avast! and loaded the Microsoft patch. It ran OK for a few days. Any ideas as to where we should be looking?
