windows xp limiting access

We have just got a new notebook with xp pro. We would like our children to be able to use it but don't want them to be able to delete any files or documents. If we make them limited users they still seem to be able to do this. Is the only way to make them guest users or are we doing something wrong

Guest users can still delete files. Each user has their own My Documents and if you right click it you can make it private so noone can access it but you. In this folder you can store the files that you don't want your kids to delete.

There are more options than you are given generally. If you go into Control Panel>performance and maintenance>administrative tools>computer management>local users and groups, there are more categories of user. You may be able to find a group in there that suits your purpose.
