ha, my neighbour is having a bad time with his 4 year old pc and I have just found out he does not have Service Pack 1 or Service pack 2 installed. I couldn't believe this, how he's managed for so long with out especially sp1.

Thing is I am unsure myself is it the Service pack 2 download that will compensate for SP1 or do you have to install Service pack 1 then service pack 2 over the 1.

I have SP2 from a mag cover which I will lend him.

SP2 also contains SP1

You will also need to download all the updates since then (referred to as SP3).

Easiest way is to use AutoPatcher:

thanks, will toss the disk over his fence now.

If he's having a 'bad time' because the PC is heavily infected, then apply SP1a first and then clean up the PC. Only install SP2 once the PC is clean. Installing it on a heavily infected machine can, apparently, cause all sorts of problems.
