Windows XP and games

Hey people am pulling my hair out here.
I've got a new system AMD 2600, 512 mb ddr ram, 80gb hdd, ATI radeon 9700, Abit NF7-S Mobo running Win XP SP1.

Every game I run on the machine crashes back to the desktop, whether a latest release or a two year old game. Win xp doesn't provide me with any useful feedback as to why it has stopped just that it has. I sometimes get Blue Screen Of Deaths, "Sorry This application cannot continue" or just games crashing unexpectedly. I think something is amiss somewhere but don't know what. Ive tried patching the games, updating drivers, but nothing works. Its driving me mad as I bought the machine to play some games.

Any advice as to where to start anyone?

Thanks Powerless The games don't crash when video is playing just in normal gameplay after 10 minutes of action for instance. E.g Age of Empires 2 crashes back to the desktop after about 10 minutes. Medal Of Honor crashes at random intervals, and Max Payne crashes after I click the play option. To name a few.
