Windows XP Backup problem

I have an external USB-attached 80Gb HDD to which I have previously copied files and folders from my C: drive. This time, I thought I'd try the Windows XP Backup utility; the wizard wants to backup to "Removable Disk (E:)", but although the exernal HDD is attached it tells me "Drive E:\ is empty". How do I tell Backup to use this HDD?

Thanks, Trackrat. This has helped get me started, next problem is that my backup is >4Gb, which is the FAT32 limit. Guess I've got to do it in smaller chinks? My total backup is >12Gb.
