windows xp back up utility

I have installed the windows xp back up utility in the hope that I could use it to back up data on my computer. I want to back up to my cd-r drive but when I try this I just get a message that
'the back up file name could not be used, E:\Backup.bkf Please ensure it is a valid path and that you have sufficient access'.

In fact it only seems to be prepared to allow me to back up to a 3.5 inch floppy which, of course, is not exactly practical for backing up large amounts of data!
If I use advanced settings and open the backup tab, the 'Backup destination' box is greyed out.
I am sure that I am doing something wrong or missing something obvious but I cant see what it is. If anyone knows how to use this utility I'd be glad of some advice as I am struggling to find a simple, effective way of backing up data I cant afford to lose.

This is an annoying feature of XP's Backup.

The way round it is to create a folder on your hard drive, drag and drop the files, folders etc you wish to back up to it and then burn the entire folder to a CD-R (in multisession form if the size of the folder warrants it).

Do a Finalise before the last multisession burning.

You could, of course, create the BackUp folder within Nero itself in multisession form rather than on the hard drive and, again, just drag and drop what you want to backup to the BackUp folder's name.
