how do I get rid of the annoying text boxes whenever the cursor is close to an icon ? I believe it is called autohelp but I don't know how to disactive it.

They are called ToolTips but I don't know how to turn them off or whether it is possible.

It is possible click here Number 13.

Personally, I like them but each to their own.

create a system restore point

click start/run

type "regedit" click ok

click "my computer" top left then "file" then "export"

this will back up the registry, save it somewher like the desktop for safe keeping.

next navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\advanced

in the right pane right click and select "new" "DWORD value"

call it "EnableBalloonTips" and give it a value of "0"

if you already have the entry just click it and set the value of "1" to "0" to disable it

Yep, not clear whether we are talking ToolTips or BaloonTips (No 10 on my link covers the latter).
