Windows won't start!!!

Hope you can help please.

My husband accidently pulled out the plug for the pc and when we switched on again it made a clicking noise and a message come up saying a file is missing or corrupted and windows is unable to start.
The file is:
windows root>\system 32\ntoskrnl.exe

I tried to start it with my XP cd in but nothing changes. Doesn't respond to control/alt/delete.

How can I get the file on to the pc? Even if I downloaded it somehow onto a cd or floppy I don't know how I can get it on if it won't even start windows!

I'm on the laptop.

Thanks for that.

Strangely enough I had the lap top on with the article you recommended ready for action - and when I switched on the blooming thing decided to work fine!!!

Must've just needed a rest.

Help appreciated anyway.
