Advice Please

My dh's laptop went to the repair shop and came back having lost everything, they reinstalled windows vista basic on it.

It has been fine but he now has a message saying the activation key is invalid.

there are three options.
1 use automated phone system
2. buy new product key online
3. Try different product key.

Then says windows vista home basic product key you typed is invalid for activation.

Why is this? Is it becasue the one the repair shop put it is only for a limited time period? Do we need to purchase a new key online.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Take it back - they have installed a fake copy.

I would advise a trip to the repair shop to complain and tell them you will report them to microsoft if there is any bother over the key. You certainly do not need to buy another key.

Or you could just change the key to the one that should be on a label on the bottom of the laptop and then activate it. Sometimes the label is underneath the battery so you have to take battery out to see it.

Any probs at all, take it back. They should have activated it before returning it to you.
