Windows Updates

Is there a way I can saved Windows Updates to the Hard drive at least then to CD. I have searched by using the wildcard search of *.exe but too much results. So then I searched using Windows Explorer. As I am using a Dial-Up Connection there must be a way of saving to disk. If in the event I have to format the hard disk all the Updates would be gone and would have to be redownloaded again. Alot of money wasted. An Computer Expert I know has told me it is not possible. But in a Computer magazine it said go to Windows Catelogue and saved through Windows Catelogue. Any help would be much appreciated. If possible try and avoid Windows Catelgoue. Thank You.
