Windows Update Not Working

  Pesala 18:43 22 Jul 04

If I try Windows Update, two critical updates are shown. If I install them, they download very fast like they are already cached, then I get this message:

"The following updates have been successfully installed:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894)

Security Update for Windows Me (KB840315)"

After rebooting, when I go to update again. The same two are listed. The Pay Pal scam is still not detected by Internet Explorer: [email protected]" title="[email protected]" TARGET="_new">click here

I have just checked Windows update and there is nothing new there.

Knowing how diligent you normally are with updates and the like, Pesala, I would suspect that something undesirable may have got into your machine.

Have a look at the 'Windows Update.log' file to see if there have been any errors/failures with the two updates in question. If there have been errors can you post the error code(s) please? G

You can troubleshoot most Win update errors here - click here. I'm going offline for a bit. Will return to see if you've made any progress. Good luck, G

No sign of my problem on the Trouble-shooting page.

No errors are reported, but the same two patches are listed every time. I tried deleting Windows Update.log, updated again, with the exact same result:

Two updates found: Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894) Download size: 2.8 MB, 2 minutes

Security Update for Windows Me (KB840315) Download size: 202 KB, < 1 minute

Downloading and installing takes a few seconds only, and Installation is successful (allegedly).

I have 3 that download as you describe and then will not install, producing the Microsoft send an error report. They are KB840315, KB841873, KB 839645. I have sent the error reports 3 times for each. Funny thing is that KB832894 downloaded with the others and installed. Will wait and see what,if any, feedback I get from Microsoft.

I will also try them on another PC in case this one has a nasty.

Checked on my other PC and download and install of 5 updates went very smoothly. Back to the drawing board on the first machine.

Pesala - worth a check with Belarc Advisor (click here to d'load latest version) to confirm whether these updates have correctly installed or not. If not, turn off your AV+firewall & try installing again.

Newuser38 - turn off your AV+firewall & try installing again (worked for this person click here). Good luck, G

Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 (IE 6.0 SP1)

Internet Explorer Updates SP1;Q810847;Q822925;Q813951;Q828750;Q824145

No sign of (KB832894) so I guess the update was unsuccessful.
