I have performed an XP install over iteslf to cure a network problem. This was corrected but now Windows update will not work properly. It tries to download and install Windows Installer 3.1 and Service pack 3 but both fail. Curiously the download size of both is 0 MB. What could be causing this?

Start - run - type services.msc press ok

scroll down and highlight Background Intelligent Transfer - check it has started.

The problem is on a friends computer but he's out at the moment. I will get him try that when he's back. Thanks.

He has checked the Background Intelligent Transfer and it has started.

Try the MS cleanup and reboot, then try again click here

Also reregister the MS windows installer click here

If you have Norton installed, briefly disable this and try again, maybe worth trying if another AV installed.

Skidzy, we tried your suggestions and although they didn't seem to have worked at first, windows update now seems to have sorted itself out. Thanks for the help.
