Windows Update Error 8007273D

I have a laptop running Vista. For some reason, I cannot now install updates, I get an Error Code 8007273D and the computer is reporting an problem with Defender.
I checked on a MS forum and it seems that it may be something to do with Internet Explorer. I usually use Firefox so I was not aware that Internet Explorer does not connect now. I have reset IS to the default settings and made sure that the connection is set to LAN but it still does not connect to anything.
Any ideas, anyone.

Has no-one else expirienced this problem?
There seems to be other issues with this PC, like Media Player not starting automatically.
Perhaps I should just do a clean install!

You could try ,Internet Options.Advanced and press reset. That resets internet explorer to its original state. You may have to enable some of the Add-ons after doing it.
Have you tried running any of your security programs or updating W.defender.
