Hi

Just reformatted my laptop and everything reinstalled fine. Now XP is downloading the updates to bring me up to date, but there is one that keeps coming up all the time. I choose custom install, and after a few seconds it says installed! But its not, and appears a few minutes later. This is going on for few days. I also selected the express install option but no good. The file is:

MSXML 4.0SP2 Security Update (KB927978) 5.4mb

This is really strange....

See the cut and paste bit below. Try what they suggest:- To work around this problem, manually install the security update from the Microsoft Download Center, and then click Ignore when the error message is displayed. To confirm that the installation was successul, verify that the Msxml4.dll file in %systemroot%\System32 is version 4.20.9841.0.

"Known issues with this security update
• Security update 927978 for MSXML 4.0, for MSXML 4.0 SP1, and for MSXML 4.0 SP2 does not support the complete removal of MSXML 4.0 because this version of MSXML is installed in side-by-side mode. To work around this issue, follow these steps:1. Remove security update 927978 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel.
2. Delete the MSXML4.dll file from the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

The earlier versions of the Msxml4.dll and Msxml4r.dll files are restored to both the side-by-side folder and the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

Well Microsoft surely make things easy! Thats a nightmare, I would be totally lost trying to do that! The thing is I get the message saying "installation successful" every time. But its only after 2 seconds so obviously its not. Why cant they just send a new one to fix it! Im lost here, and will have to leave it, but thanks for your help.

OK, perhaps cut & paste wasn't such a good idea; that does all look a bit frightening.

Could you manage the important bit:

go to the Microsoft Download Center, find that particular update, choose to install manually, and then click Ignore when the error message is displayed?

I'll try to post a link to the relevant page of the download center
