can I mute the startup and closedown music on windows xp. I have looked in tweak u but cant find anything.

hzhzhz, navigate to start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices and click on Change the sound scheme.

In the program events box, scroll down to "Exit Windows" and click on it, then click on the down arrow in the Sounds box below. Just go to the top of the list and select (None) then apply.

Repeat the above for "Start Windows".

Check you keyboard. Some are fitted with "Mute" keys.

Mine retain their memory after being shutdown so start-ups can be silent. You do have to remember to use the mute just before you shutdown though.

I have a similar problem but the opposite, I lost the start up and shut down music some time ago, sound is fine otherwise.
I tried the method you describe for switching it off (in reverse), using the default setting, still does not give startup sounds, any ideas,

Yes Go to Control Panel\Sounds then scroll to the start and assign a sound from Drop Down list
