windows slow startup!!

my windows xp takes about 5 mins to startup from the xp login point. are there any ways i can speed startup without affect my system stability?? i have 2 gig of memory and have run defrag etc, but to no avail.

How much have you got running in your system tray?
To disable programs not required go to start menu, hit the run tab and type 'msconfig'. under the 'startup' tab you'll find all programs that start when windows does. Uncheck the programs not required....
That should help speed it up.

it could be a trojan running in the background try starting up with your internet disconnected and do as Ginge says. Then run spybot and adaware etc. Also trend micro will do an online nasties check for you.

Clear out all temporay files and folders -- use Crap Cleaner click here

Scan for malware spyware and viruses --Free Anti Spyware :-

Clean the registry -- Free Registry cleaners :-

Easycleaner click here ( Use with care, It advises you to back up the registry first, this is a good idea as it cleans rather aggressively. )

Cut down on the programs that load at startup -- Start - Run type msconfig - startup tab- untick everything except for firewall, antivirus and antispyware
