My Vista laptop keeps telling me that my anti-virus is turned off! (AVG 8 free) And windows security centre will not let me turn it on! Is this a common problem with avg and windows vista? can anyone help please.

I think this is a problem with Vista and AVG, but I think there is a box to tick "Don't show me this again"
Not certain as I don't use AVG

Hi rawprawn,
thanks for your reply.

I did tick the box but still not been able to make the change from OFF to ON.

for this advice which worked for my Security Center and AVG:

Security Center depends on the Windows Management Intrumentation service for its reporting. The usual cause of an antivirus program no longer reporting its status in the Security Center is an inconsistency or failed registration for the antivirus program in the WMI Repository.

For Vista:

Open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

Type the following command:

winmgmt /salvagerepository

(note the space before the /) and hit Enter

Wait a short while while it works

The above command performs a consistency check on the WMI repository, and if an inconsistency is detected, rebuilds the repository.
