Windows reinstall stuck @ 49%

My brother-in-law is having a few problems with Windows XP Home.

It started with a missing .DLL file (hal.dll).

His system, unlike mine, has not got a separate copy of Windows on it's own partition but he does have a original copy on CD Rom.

He has attempted to 'quick' format his drive and then reinstall Windows from the CD but it only gets to 49% then starts saying it is unable to load several .inf files.

Any ideas ?

It may be overheating, That's normally the Prob when it stops at loading OS. Try with Side of Computer, Check CPU fan is working as it should

if it has had problems, it would be better with a full format.

The inability to load some files off the cdrom can also be caused by a faulty memory module ( I had one like this a few weeks ago). If he has more than one stick of ram, try taking one out at a time and trying. Or borrowing a known good one.
