Windows Recovery Problems

I have been given a laptop that will not boot into Vista to recover some files/photos which I've done but I've tried to use the Recovery disk to reinstall the O/S.
The first time I tried it I got an error to say that a .dll file was corrupt and to run the chkdsk utility - Installation cancelled.
I ran chkdsk and got the message
File Record segment 22544 is unreadable
File Record segment 22545 is unreadable
File Record segment 22546 is unreadable
File Record segment 22547 is unreadable
Followed by
File Record segment 21440 is an orphan
File Record segment 21441 is an orphan
File Record segment 21442 is an orphan
I then tried to run chkdsk D:/f but it wouldn't run as the volume was in use and gave me the option to schedule one for the next restart which I did but as the machine won't boot it doesn't do anything.
Has the HDD failed and needs replacing? if so how do I get Vista on the new HD as I don't have an installation disk?
I would be grateful for any help with this.

Tried chksk D: /r?

I'm surprised windows is on D:

As Fruit Bat /\0/\ says, Windows would normally be found on C:.

You should also note the syntax of the chkdsk command:

chkdsk D:*/r

...where D is whichever drive holds Windows, and * is one tap of the space bar.

Thanks for your replies.

How can I run chkdsk on the C drive without it being mounted and in use?

Thanks

I would be inclined to take the HDD out and connect it up to another PC (as an extra drive) to check it
