Sometimes after downloading a movie or film clip i go into the folder i downloaded it to and up pops a message saying "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" ! Any ideas ?

Th error message that you see should have more details on it. What does it say?

Just says..
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell microsoft about this problem. Then at the bottom it has the debug box or the send error or dont send error boxes.

It doesant give you a signature or mention dll's???

You could also do Start->Run->SFC /Scannow

let it run and see what happens. It might ask you to insert your XP disc

When you go into Error report contents it has signature feef04bd and module numbers from 1-101 all with different dll's.

Thanks for that paul, dont have an XP disc though. It all came pre installed !

Tried that, still the same problem.

Have you checked the event viewer (start>control panel>admin tool>event viewer)

Click on the red cross and you should get a pop up with a hyperlink to possible causes.

I had a similar problem which was (very probably) caused by a free update of NIS 2006 to NIS 2007. Ever since I uninstalled NIS 2007 the system seems to be stable without explorer crashes.

Went into that. It says it was an application error, a faulting module Just tried to open the film via vlc media player and it plays ok through that !

Probabilitydrive, thanks for the tip. Went and downloaded a divx player/converter and all seems ok now. Thanks also to Paul1975 for taking the time to help. Many thanks all !!
