Windows Original Setup CD-ROM

  Skinn 17:08 05 Apr 09

Windows XP Home came pre-installed on the PC so I don't have the original CD so took it to the local repair shop. The following message came up:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Set up using the original Setup CD-ROM

Would it be advisable to get a Windows CD or is there an alternative as I can't find one on Ebay. How easy is a repair to carry out? If so, where should I source it from and how much would it cost?

Thanks in advance.

Won't work as he/ she doesn't have a XP CD.

Can you boot to a command Prompt? (tap F8 while booting)

Boot to the command prompt and type:

Press Enter and follow the on-screen prompts to restore to an earlier date/time

if will not boot to command prompt then:
You will need some form of access to your NTFS drive a Linux live CD is very useful for this sort of thing.

Thanks for that - I really meant try Pineman100's posting, but I didn't make it clear.

Unfortunately with a config\system file corruption windows often won't boot to anything and I think he/she will need to go the
Linux route or
borrow a XP CD to do a repair or
a factory reset (which may lose all his /her data)

Thanks. Do you know where I can get an XP CD?

As you took it to the local repair shop I assume the problem is now sorted.

A snapshot of your good working system using Acronis True Image or one of the free programs would probably be better than buying a copy of XP.
