Windows Movie Maker problem

For sometime I have been downloading TV films to my hard drive, editing out adverts etc & burning them to DVD.
All of a sudden Movie Maker has started to close down as soon as I drag the imported movie file onto the timeline ready for editing.
The help notification that pops up, suggests that DEP(Data Exection Prevention) is causing this. I cannot find a way to disable this & cannot reinstall Movie Maker as it was already installed on my PC & I have no discs.
I have tried System Restore to no avail & HP can only suggest a complete System Recovery. This is too drastic a step to take when I'm sure that there must be a small tweak somewhere that can resolve the problem.
I have searched the Forum for possible answers & not had any luck.
I am running Vista Home Premium on an HP Touch Smart PC.
I hope that someone can help.
Thank you

Thanks for the help Eedcam, but it doesn't answer the problem with Movie Maker. You cannot turn off DEP for Movie Maker.
I just download Movie Maker 2.4 as Microsoft says it will work for those that cannot run the Vista version.
This didn't help as it doesnt recognise the type of file!!
Back to square one.

Thks again Eedcam. I tried most of the suggested solutions on your link & none of them worked.
I also have Cyberlink Power Director installed & that suffers from exactly the same problem.
Below is the error report that I get when WMM closes. I don't know if this will mean anything to yourself or anyone else.

Thanks MCE2K5
I have tried all of the different filters & can load the recorded file into WMM, but as soon as I drag it onto the timeline - the programme closes.
I have tried most of the suggested solutions & even disabled DEP. No luck.
I will send the error repot to Microsoft. I have sent it to HP.
Thanks.

I know WMM is free but much better suited for what you are doing is video redo tv suite alas not free though the trial is fully working

Hi Eedcam
Brilliant solution & a great programme. Makes WMM look stupid. I'm using the trial at the moment, but will be buying it.
It's not worth trying to get any sense out of HP or Microsoft when this is available.
Thanks again for your help.
Regards
David
