Can someone tell me how to switch off windows messenger on start up please

you can turn it of all together
goto controlpannel/admintools/services
scoll down to messenger double click on messenger then start up type dropdown box select disable

3 versions of Messenger - Live Messenger (the most recent click here) etc or MSN Messenger 4.7/5.1 that starts up with XP on some systems?. The Windows Messenger service is not the same thing, and is disabled on systems with SP2 installed. click here

Remove the built-in version of Messenger altogether; click here
