Windows Media Player wont work

Someone I know just bought a second hand PC with no system discs. The person who previously had it installed both XP and XP Professional.

The Windows media player wont work and he was wondering if the two operating systems are causing some sort of conflict.

How can the problem be resolved without having to re-format and buy new system discs?

i think you need to go a bit deeper as to how
there installed, on seperate drives, plus in this
case updates possibly will not be an option

A bit more info required. Does it just not open, or does it play sound with no video etc? What version of wmp?
How much RAM? What graphics?
