I have just done a clean reinstall of windows XP and Media Player will not play DVD's,".vob file"
I just get the message "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer." What is missing?

you can download the dvd codec for media player if you click here (Windows Media Player DVD Video Decoder Utility)

pr download and install the k-lite codec pack click here

Also ensure that DVD is checked in the File Types and consider downloading the standard K-lite Codecs pack free from:

which serves the vast majority of requirements.

Don't go to the K-lite website as it now seems to charge...:-(
