Windows Media player wont play AVI files

I am running Windows Media Player 11 on windows XP home SP2. I tried to view AVI clips from a CD which in the past have run perfectly, now I either get a black screen or the clip refuses to play. I can run the clips on Nero show time (Nero7) with no problem; also they play on Window Movie Maker, what’s gone wrong?

Are all the File Types from Tools>Options Enabled?

Yes all file types from Tools > Options have been enabled

You need to install DivX click here

Or Klite codec pack (free), Standard or Lite are enough for most people's needs - click here

Sorry, Standard or Basic

Divx had no effect at all, Klite standard included media player classic, that would play the video clips but Media player 11 wont, I still can't play the clips directly from the CD, which until a short time ago I could.
