Windows Media Player Skips Tracks

I am using WMP11 in a new build PC with Windows XP SP3. I took a known good IDE CD/RW drive from my previous system and have also a new SATA DVD/RW drive installed. Both drives exhibit the same fault when trying to play audio CDs with Windows Media Player. Whe I click to play (and when I insert the CD initially) the player steps or skips over the complete track list and then stops.
I can play my CDs using an alternative player so it must be something with WMP, but what ? I would prefer to use WMP if I can. Any ideas ?
