Windows Media Player causes disconnection

Whenever I play sound or video on any player - Windows Media Player or Creative Mediasource - for some strange reason it causes the internet dialup connection to be lost. Sometimes causes the PC to crash/restart.
This is a brand new PC but retailer (in New Zealand) not helpful so far. XP Home edition, Soundblaster Audigy card. Anyone got any ideas why this should happen?
I reinstalled all drivers/software from the supplied Creative CD but it didn't help.

That looks useful, I'll try it.
